Is The Knot worth it for wedding venues? What to do instead

By James Howard, owner of Chelsea Sun Inn3 min read

For years, a listing on The Knot or WeddingWire was the default way for a venue to get inquiries. Plenty of venues still get bookings that way. But many owners are asking whether the cost, and the competition on the same page, is still worth it.

This isn't a takedown of listing sites. They have huge audiences and they work for some venues. The real question is whether they should be your main source of bookings, or one channel among several. Here's how to think about it.

What you're paying for

Wedding marketplaces such as The Knot and WeddingWire (both part of The Knot Worldwide) and Zola charge venues for visibility. Pricing varies by market, category and placement, and it's usually quoted directly by the platform. One 2024 overview from Curate estimated typical listing packages from a few hundred dollars to well over $1,000 a month, with featured placement costing more. Ask for current pricing in your own area before you decide.

What you get in return is exposure to couples browsing the platform, plus the inquiries they send you through it.

The trade-offs

  • You're on a page with your competitors. Couples browse and contact many venues from the same search results. Your listing is one of many, and often one of many that look alike.
  • Pressure to pay for placement. In busy markets, standing out often means upgrading to a more expensive package.
  • Lead quality varies. Some inquiries come from couples contacting a long list of venues at once, which makes them harder to convert.
  • You don't own the audience. When you stop paying, the visibility stops. You haven't built anything you keep.

How to tell if your listing is worth it

Look at your own numbers for the last 6 to 12 months, not the platform's dashboard alone:

  1. How much did you spend on each listing site?
  2. How many inquiries came from it?
  3. How many of those became tours?
  4. How many became booked weddings, and how much revenue did they bring in?

Divide spend by booked weddings and you have your cost per booking. If a listing books weddings at a cost you're happy with, keep it. If it mostly produces inquiries that go nowhere, that budget may work harder somewhere else.

The alternative: your own lead-generating platform

Instead of renting space on a marketplace, more venues are building their own source of inquiries:

  • Your own ads. Facebook and Instagram ads that show your venue to engaged couples in your area, with no competitors on the page.
  • Your own website. A site that shows real weddings, clear pricing and an easy way to book a tour.
  • Instant follow-up. An automatic text within minutes of every inquiry, plus follow-ups when couples go quiet.
  • Tour booking. Couples pick a tour time themselves and get reminders.
  • Your own numbers. A dashboard showing inquiries, tours and cost per booking, so you know exactly what's working.

Every inquiry from this kind of system belongs to you, and every ad, review and photo you create keeps working for you.

Should you cancel your listings right away?

Not necessarily. A sensible approach is to build your own lead source first, run both side by side for a few months and compare cost per booking. When your own system is reliably producing tours, you can reduce or drop the listings that aren't pulling their weight, with real numbers behind the decision.

How Truly Wed fits in

Truly Wed replaces WeddingWire, The Knot and Zola by building a full lead-generating platform for your venue: ads that bring couples in, a text back in minutes, tours booked onto your calendar and a dashboard that shows every number. It's the same system that rebuilt how Chelsea Sun Inn books weddings. See pricing or apply for a strategy call.

Frequently asked questions

Is The Knot worth it for wedding venues?

It depends on your cost per booking. Some venues book weddings profitably through The Knot, while others mostly get inquiries that don't convert. Compare what you spend with how many weddings the listing actually books.

What are the best alternatives to The Knot for wedding venues?

Building your own lead source: Facebook and Instagram ads, a website with clear pricing and tour booking, and fast automated follow-up. Inquiries from your own marketing belong only to you.

Should I cancel my WeddingWire or The Knot listing?

Not right away. Build your own lead source first, run both for a few months and compare cost per booking before cutting a listing.
